Things to Do With Kids in Upper Thomson, Springleaf and Mandai, Singapore

The forest on both sides of Upper Thomson Road is the last place in Singapore where the Raffles' banded langur lives. There were 68 of them left in the country in 2021, counted in 11 groups, and NParks says the whole population is now restricted to the Central Catchment Nature Reserve. That reserve starts at the kerb of this road.

The rest of what is here reads like a list somebody made up. A former Hainanese village with its house ruins still standing in the trees. Three reservoirs you can walk beside. An 18 metre lookout tower shaped like a rocket, built in 1969 and still open to climb. The five wildlife parks at Mandai. A stretch of tarmac that was a Grand Prix circuit. And a shophouse strip that was feeding this estate long before the Thomson-East Coast Line reached it on 28 August 2021 and gave it five stations in one day.

Eight of the 16 places below cost nothing. Every opening time, price and closure was checked at the body that runs the place, not at another guide. The forest at the top of Upper Thomson Road

1. Thomson Nature Park

Thomson Nature Park is 50 hectares of secondary forest on the site of a Hainanese village that people lived in from the 1930s until the 1980s. NParks conserved the ruins rather than clearing them, so the walk takes you past house foundations, driveways and garden walls with the forest growing through them, and signboards that explain which family lived where. There are five trails and they total 3.8km: Ruins and Figs at 1.5km, Stream and Ferns at 1.4km, Rambutan at 400m, Macaque at 350m and Langur at 150m.

This is a nature park, not a playground. No bicycles, no scooters, no pets, and the gates shut at 7pm.

Why kids will love it: Ruins are better than playgrounds for about an hour, and a six-year-old will spend that hour deciding which broken wall was somebody's kitchen. Take the Ruins and Figs Trail, which is the one with most of them. Long-tailed macaques are a common sight, so carry food in a bag that does not rustle and hold small hands near them.

2. Springleaf Nature Park

Springleaf Nature Park is 6 hectares on Nee Soon Road, beside the waterway, and it is the easiest nature park on this list to reach without a car. Springleaf station is 543 metres away, which is a ten minute walk along Upper Thomson Road past the Shell station. NParks records more than 80 species of resident and migratory bird here, including the White-throated Kingfisher, the Blue-tailed Bee-eater and the Long-tailed Parakeet, and there is a raised birdwatching platform over the waterway.

It is open 24 hours and wheelchair accessible, which Thomson Nature Park and the Lower Peirce boardwalk are not.

Why kids will love it: The birdwatching platform is the whole visit for a child. It is high enough to feel like a treehouse and the kingfishers are bright blue, which is the only field mark a five-year-old needs. Six hectares is small enough to finish before anybody complains, and Springleaf Prata Place is ten minutes back down the road, just past the station.

3. Lower Peirce Reservoir Park

Lower Peirce surrounds the second oldest reservoir in Singapore and its draw is a 900 metre wooden boardwalk that runs at the water line through mature secondary rainforest, past trees more than 100 years old. The park itself is 10 hectares and open around the clock. Bright Hill station is 947 metres away, which makes this the only reservoir park here you can walk to from a platform.

Check the date before you drive over. NParks has the boardwalk closed for maintenance with an expected completion date of 30 September 2026. Use the Casuarina or Jacaranda entrances to reach the rest of it in the meantime. The boardwalk is not wheelchair accessible in any case, and pets are not allowed on it.

Why kids will love it: A flat walk on planks out over open water, with monitor lizards in the shallows and macaques in the branches, and it takes half an hour at a child's pace. That is about the limit in this heat. Come after the boardwalk reopens, or come now and walk the Casuarina end.

4. Upper Peirce Reservoir Park

Upper Peirce is the quiet one. Five hectares on Old Upper Thomson Road, open 7am to 7pm, sitting above a reservoir that was finished in 1975 and opened by Lee Kuan Yew. It is wheelchair accessible, and the 67 lot car park is free, which Lower Peirce and Thomson Nature Park are not.

There is no playground and no water play. What there is, is a view across the water, shelters, and enough birds that NParks lists the White-throated Kingfisher, the Collared Kingfisher and the Crimson Sunbird as things to look for at the water's edge.

Why kids will love it: This is the picnic one. Spread out on the grass above the reservoir, watch for the White-bellied Sea Eagle, which is the largest bird of prey in Singapore and flies with its wings in a V, and go home. Bring everything you need, because there is nothing to buy inside the park.

5. Upper Seletar Reservoir Park

Upper Seletar is 15 hectares off Mandai Road Track 7, and it has the rocket. The lookout tower is 18 metres tall, shaped like a rocket ship, and it was built in 1969, which makes it older than every parent likely to climb it. The reservoir below it was built in 1920 and was made a historic site in 1999. There is also a single Casuarina tree by the water with two benches under it, which NParks itself lists as a feature.

All three car parks are free: 91 lots at car park A, 61 at B and 38 at C. The park is open 24 hours and wheelchair accessible, though the tower is stairs only.

Why kids will love it: Climbing the rocket is the point and the view from the top is the reward. It is a spiral staircase, so carry anyone under three. Pair it with Mandai, which is on the same road, and do the rocket first while everybody still has legs.

The road itself is the attraction

6. Old Upper Thomson Road and its park connector

Old Upper Thomson Road is the old road, left in place when the new one was built, and it now carries a 3km park connector that runs from the Casuarina car park to the far end of the road, linking Lower Peirce, Upper Peirce and Thomson Nature Park. It is wheelchair friendly for its full length and lit from 7pm to 7am. NParks closes the road to vehicles every night between 7.30pm and 6am so that nocturnal animals can cross it.

Two things to look up rather than down for. Rope bridges and canopy linkages have been strung across the road to help the Raffles' banded langur and other tree-dwelling animals move between the nature reserve and Thomson Nature Park. And this tarmac was the Singapore Grand Prix circuit: the race ran here from 1961 to 1973 on a 3.023 mile loop, with a one mile straight called the Thomson Mile and a set of bends on the back section that is still Old Upper Thomson Road today. The National Library's own history of the Singapore Grand Prix has the maps.

Why kids will love it: Tell a child they are standing on a Grand Prix track and the walk sells itself. Look for the rope bridges overhead and count them. The Springleaf Park Connector at the other end adds another 1.2km from Lentor Avenue to Upper Thomson Road, and both are flat enough for a scooter, though scooters are banned inside the nature parks themselves.

The big day out

7. Mandai Wildlife Reserve

Mandai is five ticketed parks on one site and it has been written about more than anywhere else in Singapore, so this is the short version with the 2026 numbers. Singapore Zoo, River Wonders, Night Safari, Curiosity Cove and Exploria sit at Mandai Wildlife EAST, 80 Mandai Lake Road. Bird Paradise sits at Mandai Wildlife WEST, 20 Mandai Lake Road. Rainforest Wild Adventure has a zone on each side.

Two parts cost nothing. The Mandai Boardwalk is open 7am to 7pm with last entry at 6pm, and Mandai Gallery is free with any ticket and free to walk into. There is also a rope course, Houbii Spot, inside the Mandai Wildlife EAST grounds at $20 a head for the under-120cm Mini Course and $30 for the full one, which Mandai's own website does not mention anywhere.

Why kids will love it: Free-ranging orangutans over the walkway at the zoo, eight walk-through aviaries across 17 hectares at Bird Paradise, and a tram through the dark at Night Safari that starts at 7pm. Pick one park, not two. Bus 138 from Springleaf station drops you at the gate, so you can walk Springleaf Nature Park in the morning and be at the zoo after lunch without a car.

Free, and a short walk from the station

8. Thomson Park

Thomson Park is the only playground in this guide. It sits along Jalan Keli, 220 metres from Upper Thomson station, and NParks describes it in one line: a small park with a playground and an exercise corner. That is all it is, and it is open 24 hours.

It matters because there is nothing else like it here. This stretch has two nature parks and three reservoir parks and not one slide between them, and the nearest public swimming complexes are in Ang Mo Kio and Bishan. For the big playgrounds and the pools, see our Bishan and Ang Mo Kio guide.

Why kids will love it: Swings and a climbing frame, twenty minutes of them, with no drive and no entrance queue. Use it as the reward at the end of a Thomson Plaza afternoon, or as the twenty minutes that buys you a quiet coffee at the shophouses across the road.

9. Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery

Kong Meng San Phor Kark See sits at 88 Bright Hill Road, 507 metres from Bright Hill station, and it is free to walk into every day of the year including public holidays. It is a working monastery rather than an attraction, so there is no ticket desk, no queue and no gift-shop exit. What there is: six shrine halls, the Ten Thousand Buddha Pagoda, the Dragon Pond, and enough open ground that a child can walk for half an hour without crossing a road.

The gate hours and the hall hours are different, and that trips people up. Gate 1 on Bright Hill Road opens 5am to 10pm. The shrine halls and ancestral halls open 8am to 4pm. Gate 3 on Sin Ming Avenue is temporarily closed.

Why kids will love it: The scale of it. The halls are tall enough to make a five-year-old go quiet on their own, the incense smells like nothing else they will meet that week, and the Dragon Pond at gate 4 is where small children stop and refuse to move. Go before 4pm so the halls are open, keep voices down, and cover shoulders and knees. The vegetarian Zen Cafe opens 10am to 7pm on weekdays and 10am to 5pm at weekends.

Indoors, for a wet afternoon

10. Lentor Modern

Lentor Modern opened on 6 January 2026 and it is the only mall in Lentor Hills. GuocoLand built 90,000 square feet of retail under three residential towers, connected straight into Lentor station through Exit 1, so you can get off the train and be inside without stepping outdoors. There are more than 40 shops, a Cold Storage Fresh, and a run of enrichment centres on two floors.

For a family the useful list is the enrichment floor: Hua Xia Language Centre at B1-05, PlayFACTO School at B1-06, Aspire Hub at 01-34, Cristofori Music Academy at 01-35 and Mulberry Learning at 02-01, with Kodecoon Academy added since opening. Not one of those six is on Jungle, although PlayFACTO's Sin Ming branch is.

Why kids will love it: Burger King, KFC, Tim Hortons and a claw machine shop called Fun Claw, all within a minute of a train door. It is not a destination, it is the thing you do when the rain starts at Springleaf and you still have two hours to fill.

11. Thomson Plaza

Thomson Plaza is the old mall of the estate, 222 metres from Upper Thomson station, open 10am to 10pm every day. It has a Sushiro, a Swensen's, a Pet Lovers Centre and, more usefully for a parent, a whole third floor of schools: Artlette at 03-18, Learning Point at 03-19/20, Sylvia McCully School of Dancing at 03-21/22, Yamaha at 03-24, Hua Cheng Education Centre at 03-24C, Royal Gymnastics at 03-24B and Chiu Piano at 02-06.

Two honest caveats. There is no indoor playground and no library in this mall, so it is a place to eat and take a class, not a place to let a child run. And the mall's own directory does not list Aureus Academy, which Jungle's listing places at 03-51, a unit number the directory does not contain.

Why kids will love it: The fish tanks at Pet Lovers Centre on level one, and a conveyor belt at Sushiro on level two. Park in the basement, which charges $1.40 for the first hour on a weekday and $1.50 at the weekend, both before GST.

12. Splat Paint House

Splat Paint House is a room at 207A Upper Thomson Road where the point is to throw the paint rather than brush it. You get a 40 by 50 centimetre canvas, 400ml of paint, two syringes and a squirt bottle or a water gun, plus coveralls, shoe covers, safety glasses and gloves. The paint is child-safe tempera and the studio says it washes out of hair and skin in the shower, though it may stain clothes.

It is a do-it-yourself room, not a class. The staff give a short briefing and then leave you to it. No food or drink is allowed unless you book the room privately.

Why kids will love it: Being told to throw paint at a wall, by an adult, with permission. Ages four and up get the most out of it. Book the weekday happy hour between 3pm and 6pm, which is $43 instead of $46 and last booking is 5pm, and bring a change of clothes.

13. White Canvas Studio

White Canvas Studio at 229A Upper Thomson Road is the quieter version of the same idea: an art studio with kids' classes and drop-in art jams on acrylic canvas, bags, leather, resin and edible art. It takes children from two, and unlike Splat it will teach rather than hand you a syringe and step back.

Check the day before you go, because the hours are unusual and they change with the season. Monday is 12pm to 4pm and only on selected Mondays. Tuesday is 10.30am to 6.30pm from October to February. Wednesday and Thursday run to 9pm, Friday closes at 6.30pm, and the weekend is 9am to 5pm. It is shut on public holidays.

Why kids will love it: Painting on something they can then carry, which is the difference between a canvas that goes in a cupboard and a tote bag that goes to school. A 9am weekend start is early for an art studio, which matters if your child is up at six.

Where to eat after

14. Sembawang Hills Food Centre

Sembawang Hills Food Centre, also called Jalan Leban Food Centre, was built in 1974 and sits at 590 Upper Thomson Road with 36 cooked food stalls and no wet market. It is government run, and it is the only hawker centre on the whole of Upper Thomson Road: NEA's national list has exactly one entry for this road. NEA's own description names fish and seafood soup, char kway teow, ngoh hiang and pasta among what is sold there.

Put one date in the calendar. The fourth-quarter cleaning closure is 12 October 2026, a Monday, and the centre shuts for the day.

Why kids will love it: Thirty-six stalls is a number a six-year-old can actually choose from, against the 168 at Old Airport Road. Nobody minds muddy shoes here after a morning at Lower Peirce. Come before noon at the weekend or you will be circling for a table.

15. Springleaf Prata Place

Springleaf Prata Place started at 1 Thong Soon Avenue and this is still the original shop, 120 metres from Springleaf station and a ten minute walk from Springleaf Nature Park. It opens at 8am and runs to 11pm, with last orders between 10.30pm and 10.45pm, which makes it the breakfast stop before the forest and the dinner stop after it.

One thing every guide leaves out: the company closes every one of its outlets on the first Monday of the month. Check the date before you drive up.

Why kids will love it: Watching prata being flipped and slapped a metre from your table, then eating it with your hands. Plain prata for the cautious, egg prata for the hungry. Get there before 9am at the weekend, because the queue past that is real and there is no indoor waiting area.

16. Casuarina Curry

Casuarina Curry sits at 136 and 138 Casuarina Road, off Upper Thomson Road in Sembawang Hills Estate, and it is the other prata institution of this stretch. It is a South Indian restaurant rather than a stall, and it also sells a prata workshop where a chef shows you how the dough is thrown.

Be careful with the workshop before you promise it to a child. The restaurant's own site prices it at $35 on one page and $38.15 on another, and does not say where it runs or who it takes. The site also publishes no restaurant opening hours at all. Ring 6455 9093 first.

Why kids will love it: Learning to throw prata dough, if the workshop is running. If it is not, the restaurant itself does the thing children remember, which is bringing food to the table on a metal tray with five small bowls on it and letting them decide what goes on the rice.
