Things to Do With Kids in Seletar, Fernvale and Yio Chu Kang, Singapore

Fernvale is the part of Sengkang that is not quite Sengkang. Its postal codes run 79, its neighbour Seletar runs 80, and Sengkang proper runs 54. That is not trivia. It is the reason the aeroplane playground at Seletar Aerospace Park, which sits under a working runway, almost never appears in a Sengkang round up, and the reason a family living at Fernvale Dew gets pointed at Compass One when the better morning is in the opposite direction.

This guide covers the three estates together: Seletar and Seletar Hills, Fernvale and Sengkang West, and the upper stretch of Yio Chu Kang Road. Six of the sixteen places cost nothing. Every opening time below was checked at the body that runs the place, which here meant NParks, JTC, ActiveSG, the National Environment Agency, the Prime Minister's Office and the operators' own websites. Where nobody publishes a price, this guide says so rather than repeating a figure from a blog post written in 2019.

Two warnings before you go. Until 18 October 2026 the Sengkang West LRT loop runs in one direction only, via Renjong (SW8), because the inner loop through Cheng Lim (SW1) is shut for depot track works. Trains still call at Fernvale and Thanggam, but the ride one way round takes noticeably longer. Second, the Seletar Aerospace Park cluster is 1.4 to 1.6 km from Thanggam, which is a 20 minute walk with no shade for most of it. Take bus 102, 103 or 117.

If you are heading the other way along the north east line, the Punggol guide covers the waterway and Coney Island, and the Yishun guide has Lower Seletar Reservoir Park, which despite the name sits in Yishun rather than here.

Seletar Aerospace Park, a free morning under the flight path

1. The aeroplane playground at The Oval

The Oval is an estate of 32 former Royal Air Force officers' bungalows, 19 of them restored by JTC, arranged along tree lined lanes with street names like Park Lane, Baker Street and Piccadilly. In the middle of it is a public playground built around aviation. There is a propeller plane to climb into, a control tower with a slide down the side, a helipad roundabout and a life size game of aeroplane chess painted on the ground.

It is free and it is open at any hour. There is also almost no shade over the equipment itself, so this is a before ten or after five outing rather than a midday one.

Why kids will love it: They get to sit in the pilot's seat while a real Cessna taxis past the hedge behind them. The control tower slide is the one they will queue for. Bring water, because there is no drinking point at the playground, and come early, because by late morning the metal parts are too hot to touch.

2. Plane spotting and the black and white bungalows at The Oval

Seletar Airport is a working airfield with no jet bridges and no crowds, which makes it the easiest place in Singapore to watch aircraft up close. JTC has built a boardwalk at The Oval that faces the runway and the hangars, so you can stand at the fence and watch turboprops and business jets line up. The aircraft here are small, which means they are low, slow and loud in the way children like.

The same walk takes you past the restored bungalows and the heritage signs JTC has put up, which explain how a Royal Air Force base opened in the 1920s became an aerospace park. It is a 30 minute loop at a child's pace.

Why kids will love it: Planes taking off at eye level rather than as a dot above Changi, close enough to read the registration on the tail. Give a five year old a notebook and they will write the numbers down. The heritage signs are for you, not them, so plan on one of you reading while the other watches the fence.

3. Hampstead Wetlands Park

Hampstead Wetlands Park is 3.23 hectares of pond, boardwalk and viewing deck at the edge of the aerospace estate, reached from the Seletar West park connector. NParks lists a boardwalk and a nature trail and nothing else, which is the point: there is no playground, no cafe and no toilet block, just water lilies, dragonflies and birds. JTC's own list of what to look for here runs to blue percher dragonflies, white throated kingfishers and blue tailed bee eaters.

Two practical notes. There is no car park on site. The nearest is at 2 Park Lane, a five minute walk away. The boardwalk is wheelchair accessible but the join between the trail and the boardwalk is not.

Why kids will love it: Dragonflies land on the handrail and stay there. A child with a pair of binoculars will spend 40 minutes on one deck counting birds, and the pond is shallow and covered in lilies rather than open water, so it reads as interesting rather than frightening to a three year old.

The free playgrounds of Fernvale

4. The cow playground at Fernvale Acres

Fernvale Acres is an HDB precinct off Fernvale Lane, and its playground has three cows in it. They are roughly life size and built to be climbed on and sat astride, which is unusual in an estate where most precinct playgrounds are a slide and a climbing net.

This is a precinct playground, so there is no official page, no opening hours and no facilities beyond a shelter and a bench. It is also in the middle of a residential block, so keep the noise down before 9am.

Why kids will love it: Riding a cow. There is no more to it than that, and for a three year old there does not need to be. Older siblings will get ten minutes out of it and then want the Fernvale Dew playgrounds five minutes up the road.

5. The playgrounds of Fernvale Dew and Fernvale Court

Fernvale Dew, the blocks numbered 400 and 401 on Fernvale Lane, holds several playgrounds rather than one, and they are graded by age: a low frame with soft flooring for toddlers, a curled climbing net and a mangrove root structure for children who can already climb. Ten minutes east at Fernvale Court, the open court in front of Blocks 438A and 438B has the largest single structure in the estate, with several slides off one tower. Along the park connector between Yio Chu Kang Road and Fernvale Lane there is a third set, a pair of orange banyan tree frames.

None of these has an official page, a price or a published closing time, because HDB precinct playgrounds do not get one.

Why kids will love it: Three separate clusters of playground inside a 15 minute walk, which means a six year old and a two year old can each get a proper turn without an argument. The curled net at Fernvale Dew is the one that separates the confident climbers from the rest. Go at 5pm when the blocks throw shade across the courts.

6. The rooftop playground at The Seletar Mall

The Seletar Mall has put a playground on the roof of Level 4, in the open air, with a view across the Fernvale blocks. The mall's own page says it runs from 10am to 10pm depending on the weather, and that after dark it is lit by solar lamps, which is the detail that makes it worth knowing: very few free playgrounds in Singapore are usable at 8pm.

It is not big. Think of it as the thing that buys you 20 minutes at the end of a shopping trip rather than a destination in itself. Nursing rooms and nappy changing rooms are on Basement 1 and Levels 2, 3 and 4.

Why kids will love it: A playground in the sky with an escalator ride to reach it, and at night it glows. Come at 7pm after dinner in the hawker centre next door, when the deck has cooled and the lamps are on.

Indoor, and worth the money

7. Sunshine Childhood Playland, The Seletar Mall

An indoor playground on Level 4 of The Seletar Mall, built around pretend play: a cubby house supermarket, a doctor's clinic, a kitchen, a ball pit with a toddler climbing frame, and a sensory pit filled with plastic beads and spades. The mall's own directory puts it at #04-22/23 on Level 4. Several listings, Jungle's included, still send people to #03-K1/K2 on Level 3, so go by the unit number here.

The operator publishes hours but not prices, and the mall's directory does not carry a price either. Ring 6455 0566 before you go if the budget matters. One useful quirk the operator states plainly: every outlet shuts its doors five minutes before the stated closing time.

Why kids will love it: A supermarket they are allowed to run, a clinic where they are the doctor, and a bead pit deep enough to bury a spade in. Best for two to seven year olds. Socks are the usual rule at playgrounds of this type, so bring a pair.

8. Little Splashes Aquatics, Seletar Hills

A heated indoor pool in a house on Jalan Selaseh, in the middle of the Seletar Hills landed estate. The water is a mineral pool held at 31 to 33 degrees, which matters more than it sounds: a baby who screams through a lesson in an outdoor public pool will often sit happily in this one. They take children from three months old and run through to adults.

There are seven branches across the island and this is the only one in the north east. No fees are published on the website, so ask when you enquire.

Why kids will love it: Warm water, a small pool and one instructor in the water with them rather than a class of twelve strung along a lane rope. If your child has refused swimming lessons once already, this is the format to try next.

9. HiArt, The Seletar Mall

An art studio on Level 4 of The Seletar Mall taking children from two, with drawing, painting and mixed media rather than a single technique. It is one of only two tenants in this mall that Jungle currently lists, which says more about the directory than about the mall: the mall's own store list has twelve enrichment centres on it.

Trial classes and holiday workshops are the usual way in. Its Jungle listing shows 3.8 out of 5 from 31 reviews, which is lower than most studios in the directory and worth reading before you commit to a term.

Why kids will love it: They come home with something they made, on a Saturday morning, in the same mall as lunch and the rooftop playground. For a two or three year old it is the messy play they are not allowed to have at home.

10. OhmSantih Yoga, Jalan Kayu

A yoga studio above the shophouses on Jalan Kayu that runs a children's course alongside its adult classes. It is a small operation, five out of five from 30 reviews on its Jungle listing, and the phone is answered between 9am and 9pm rather than by a call centre.

Children's yoga is an easier sell than it sounds in an estate with no public pool and no sports hall within walking distance. It is also indoors, which in this part of Singapore means it works at 2pm in March.

Why kids will love it: Balancing on one leg and falling over, in a room where falling over is the point. Good for a child who will not sit still in a classroom and does not want a competitive sport either. Ask about the kids' course specifically, since the adult timetable dominates the website.

Sport and community

11. Fernvale Community Club

A five storey building next door to The Seletar Mall that opened on 25 September 2022, and the most useful single address in this estate. It holds a 24 hour gym, a childcare centre, a floor with a playground and activity rooms, badminton courts, a jogging track, a cafe, and the hawker centre and market in entry 13. Dancepointe Academy runs its Fernvale ballet classes inside it at #01-03.

The counter is open 10am to 6pm, but the building itself runs longer and the gym does not close at all. Course listings move month to month, so check the onePA page for the current term rather than assuming last term's timetable holds.

Why kids will love it: A playground, a badminton court and a plate of chicken rice in one building, with a lift between them. On a wet Saturday this is the answer, and it costs nothing to walk in.

12. Yio Chu Kang Sport Centre

The nearest full sports complex to Seletar Hills, sitting beside Yio Chu Kang MRT and the bus interchange, 120 m from the station gantry. ActiveSG runs a stadium, a sport hall, a gym, a squash centre, a tennis centre, beach volleyball courts and a swimming complex on the one site, open 7am to 10pm daily.

Check the date before you travel. ActiveSG has the whole facility closed on 23 September 2026 for upgrading and maintenance. The address is an Ang Mo Kio one, which is a reminder that the Yio Chu Kang name on this complex refers to the MRT station rather than to the Seletar side of Yio Chu Kang Road.

Why kids will love it: Beach volleyball courts with real sand, a running track they are allowed on, and a gym that takes students at $1.50 a visit. For a ten year old who has outgrown playgrounds, this is where the afternoon goes.

Where to eat

13. Fernvale Hawker Centre and Market

Twenty eight cooked food stalls and a wet market on the upper floors of Fernvale Community Club, opened with the building in September 2022. It is one of 18 hawker centres in Singapore run by an operator appointed by the National Environment Agency rather than by NEA directly, which is why the room is newer and better lit than the centres built in the 1980s.

The honest catch: individual stalls set their own hours and no centre wide closing time is published anywhere. If you are making a trip for one particular stall, go at lunch rather than at 8pm.

Why kids will love it: Lifts, trays they can carry themselves, a wet market to walk through, and 28 stalls to argue over. The seats are in the same building as the community club playground, so one parent can eat while the other supervises.

14. Jalan Kayu's prata strip

Roti prata is the single best known thing about this corner of Singapore, and Jalan Kayu is where it is sold. The shops sit in a row of shophouses a few minutes on foot from Thanggam LRT, and several of them trade deep into the night.

Be warned that this strip is the least documented place in this guide. Not one shop on it publishes opening hours or a menu online, and the domain for the best known of them no longer resolves. Treat it as somewhere you stop on the way back from The Oval, not somewhere you drive across the island to at a fixed time.

Why kids will love it: Watching the dough get flipped and slapped on the griddle, then eating it torn into strips with a bowl of curry to dip. Plain prata is the safest order for a small child. Ask for it without egg and let them dip rather than pouring the curry over.

15. Wildseed Cafe at The Summerhouse

The Summerhouse is a restored colonial bungalow at 3 Park Lane, and Wildseed occupies the ground floor with courtyards and alfresco tables spilling into the garden around it. It opens at 8am every day, which makes it the only place in the aerospace park that works for breakfast before the playground rather than lunch after it. Last orders are at 4.30pm.

Baby chairs are available if you ask in advance, and the garden is pet friendly, so expect dogs.

Why kids will love it: Space to move between courses, grass instead of a carpet, and dogs at the next table. Take the 8am slot, eat, then walk five minutes to the aeroplane playground before the sun gets high.

16. Wheeler's Estate

A restaurant, a bar, a lawn and a picnic operation spread across a former British airbase site at 2 Park Lane. It is the biggest of the Seletar Aerospace Park venues and the one most likely to have a market or a live band on. Weekends open at 9am, which is the slot that suits families: by evening there is live music from 7.30pm and the room changes character.

Note the weekday hours. Monday does not open until 5pm and Tuesday to Thursday not until 3pm, so a weekday lunch here is not possible.

Why kids will love it: Room to run on the lawn while the food comes, which is the whole reason parents drive out here. Take a ball. Go at 9am on a Saturday and you will have the grass to yourselves for an hour.

Enrichment classes in Seletar and Fernvale you can book on Jungle

Jungle lists ten places across postal sectors 79 and 80, and eight of them are classes. That is the lowest count of any town in this series, and it is why so many entries above are marked not yet listed.
